Wa, Upper West Region

MTN Ghana has announced a $1.1 billion investment programme over the next three years to strengthen its telecommunications infrastructure, expand network coverage and improve service quality as the company marks 30 years of operations in Ghana.

The announcement was made by the company’s Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, Joseph Dogbe, during a media and stakeholder engagement forum in Wa. He disclosed that approximately $318 million would be invested in 2026 alone, underscoring the company’s commitment to improving connectivity and meeting the growing communication needs of customers across the country.

As part of the expansion programme, MTN Ghana is deploying 500 additional network sites nationwide. The initiative is expected to extend coverage to more communities, increase network capacity and enhance the reliability of services for individuals, businesses and institutions that depend on digital connectivity.

MTN Ghana currently serves approximately 32 million subscribers, making its network a significant part of the country’s telecommunications landscape. Dogbe emphasised that connectivity had become essential to national development, noting that every Ghanaian deserved access to the benefits and opportunities offered by a modern, connected society.

“We remain committed to building a stronger network, backed by real investment,” he stated.

He acknowledged that the company’s journey had included challenges, particularly at times when network coverage did not extend as far as expected or service delivery fell below customers’ expectations. He expressed appreciation for the patience and continued support of subscribers as the company worked to improve its infrastructure and service performance.

The investment announcement comes against the backdrop of strong business performance. According to Dogbe, MTN Ghana recorded revenue growth of 32 per cent, reflecting the company’s continued commercial expansion. However, he stressed that the significance of the company’s performance should not be measured solely by financial results, but also by the opportunities it creates for customers, communities and the wider Ghanaian economy.

The company also highlighted its contribution to national revenue through taxation and statutory payments. During the first half of 2026, MTN Ghana paid GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes, alongside an additional GH¢385 million in fees and levies. These payments underscore the company’s contribution to public finances and the broader economic environment in which it operates.

The Wa engagement formed part of activities commemorating MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary, celebrated under the theme of progress powered by customers and communities. The anniversary provides an opportunity for the company to reflect on its development over the past three decades while outlining its priorities for the future.

With its latest investment commitments, MTN Ghana is positioning network expansion and service improvement at the centre of its next phase of growth. The planned deployment of additional sites, supported by substantial capital investment, is intended to address rising demand for connectivity and strengthen the infrastructure needed to support Ghana’s digital transformation.

As the company enters its fourth decade in the country, the success of these commitments will ultimately be judged by the improvements customers experience in network availability, reliability and service quality, as well as the extent to which stronger connectivity supports economic activity and expands opportunities across Ghana.
