The accelerating transformation of Africa’s media landscape has intensified the need for journalists who are not only grounded in traditional reporting practices but also equipped to navigate digital disruption, shifting revenue models, and emerging technologies. Within this evolving context, the Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP) stands out as a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening journalistic capacity and fostering innovation across the continent.
Launched by MTN Group in partnership with the University of Johannesburg and the African Editors Forum, the programme reflects a collaborative approach to redefining media practice in Africa. It moves beyond conventional training models by integrating academic learning with industry engagement, positioning itself as a forward-looking platform for professional development.
At the centre of the programme is a certified 12-week curriculum that combines online academic instruction with immersive, in-person engagement in Johannesburg. This hybrid structure allows participants to engage deeply with contemporary media issues while also benefiting from practical exposure and peer interaction. The curriculum is intentionally multidisciplinary, addressing critical areas such as digital transformation, media sustainability, journalism ethics and law, entrepreneurial media practice, and the growing influence of emerging technologies on information ecosystems.
These thematic areas are particularly relevant in an era characterised by rapid technological change and increasing concerns about misinformation, audience fragmentation, and financial sustainability within the media sector. By equipping participants with both analytical frameworks and practical tools, the programme contributes to developing journalists who are capable of responding to these challenges with both competence and creativity.
Equally significant is the programme’s emphasis on building networks. By convening journalists from diverse national and professional contexts, MIP facilitates knowledge exchange and fosters a collaborative community of practice. This networked approach enhances the capacity of participants to engage with cross-border issues and contributes to a more integrated African media space.
The initiative also underscores the importance of ethical responsibility in journalism. As information flows become more complex and contested, maintaining standards of accuracy, credibility, and accountability remains essential. The programme therefore integrates ethical considerations throughout its curriculum, reinforcing the role of journalism as a public good.
Applications for the current cohort are now open, with a deadline of 8th May 2026. Interested applicants can submit their applications through the official portal:
