MTN Ghana has emerged as a dominant force in network performance, sweeping three major honours at the Ookla Speedtest Awards ceremony held during Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Spain.
The telecom giant was recognised as the Fastest Mobile Network in Ghana, Best Fixed Network in Ghana, and Best Fixed Network in Western Africa — a remarkable treble that underscores the company’s growing infrastructure ambitions on the continent.
The awards, announced on April 19, 2026, are determined entirely by independent data drawn from millions of real consumer speed tests conducted on the Ookla Speedtest platform, widely considered the gold standard for measuring real-world internet performance. MTN Ghana posted a Speedtest Connectivity Score of 67.16, outpacing rival operators in several West African markets including Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania.
MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett attributed the recognition to the company’s deliberate and sustained investment in network infrastructure. “At MTN Ghana, we believe that a strong, dependable network is fundamental to expanding digital access, driving economic growth and supporting Africa’s progress,” he stated. Blewett added that the company is actively accelerating network site deployments to further improve quality of service across the country.
Chief Technology Officer Reuben Opata echoed the sentiment, congratulating the MTN team and reaffirming the company’s commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality connectivity experiences for customers nationwide.
The Ookla awards assess operators across four key dimensions: speed, coverage, consistency, and overall user experience — all evaluated through authentic customer testing, lending the honours significant credibility within the global telecoms industry.
The wins come on the back of major capacity upgrades to MTN Ghana’s radio and transport infrastructure. Looking ahead, MTN Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita has announced plans to inject US$1.1 billion into Ghana’s network infrastructure over the next three years, signalling an even more aggressive expansion drive targeted at broader coverage and improved service delivery.
