The Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Council for Graduates to create job opportunities and enhance the employability of young graduates in Ghana.

The agreement, signed at the Ministry’s headquarters in Accra, is expected to lay the groundwork for a nationwide graduate employment initiative that blends academic training with practical industry experience.

The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, described the partnership as a major step toward addressing youth unemployment and promoting innovation.

“We know what this initiative has achieved in other countries, and we want to see similar results in Ghana,” Dr. Pelpuo said. “It is no longer about whether we desire it or not, it is now about putting the plans into action.”

The delegation from the African Council for Graduates was led by its President, Mr. Thamsanqa Maqubela, who praised the Ministry’s commitment to the partnership, noting that Ghana’s public sector had shown remarkable readiness and collaboration.

“Our visit here confirms that the public sector in Ghana provides the right leadership and direction for private sector growth,” Mr. Maqubela remarked. “The diligence and responsiveness of the Ministry gives us confidence that this initiative will be a success.”

Mr. Maqubela further revealed that talks have begun with the South African High Commission to allow Ghanaian graduates to undertake workplace training with South African companies operating in Ghana and across the continent.

The programme, to be launched next year, will begin with the recruitment of 1000 students, and 1,000 graduates in its first phase. It seeks to establish what the Council calls “campus manufacturing” – a model that integrates learning, innovation, and workplace training on university campuses.

The ceremony ended with both parties officially signing the MoU, signaling the start of what is hoped to be a long-term collaboration to transform graduate employment in Ghana.
