Accra, Oct. 15, – The 2024/25 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League (WPL) has officially been launched on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, with some exciting packages laid out to develop women’s football in Ghana.
The Southern zones will receive GH₵60,000 and the Northern zone sides will also receive GH₵65,000 and their fuel support from GOIL and their package from Melcom Ghana. Dr. Gifty Oware-Mensah, Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association made this known at the launch of this year’s Women’s Premier League.
She highlighted the development and preparations towards the upcoming season, training of all the Division one league clubs administrators, training of Women’s coaches, training of female Goalkeepers trainers, training of Referees.
According to her, the FA will continue to give the sixty thousand (GH₵60,000) appearance fee to the clubs, provide all WPL clubs with 30 pair of boots from Puma and footballs for the season. Pre-match and post-match interviews are now compulsory.
She also revealed that Global TV will show the Northern zone matches while Max TV will also show the Southern zone matches respectively.
She commended Malta Guinness for believing in the development of women’s football, which had seen tremendous growth since coming on board as headline sponsors.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Malta Guinness, the official sponsor of the Women’s Premier League, have introduced individual cash awards for the upcoming season. The Overall Best Coach, as well as the Best Player in both the Southern and Northern Divisions, will each receive GH₵10,000 for their performances.
The Marketing Manager of Malta Guinness, Dinah Asabea Darko, explained that the new awards are “aimed at recognizing and rewarding the hard work and commitment that players and coaches contribute to the growth of the league.”
Darko added: “In further support of excellence, this season we are proud to introduce special cash awards for the best player in both the Southern and Northern Divisions, as well as the best coach of the season.”
She also expressed excitement for the upcoming season, wishing all teams the best.
The event was attended by officials from Malta Guinness, captains and coaches of participating clubs, officials of the GFA, other stakeholders, and the press.
Organizers announced that the new season will begin on Friday, October 18, 2024, with 20 clubs competing across the Northern and Southern Zones.
